No matter if it is your first move or your fifteenth, moving your family can be really stressful. Even if it is just that you finally made the decision to move off-base for the first time, there are a lot of factors to consider and a lot of other considerations that come into play. Thankfully, with some structured planning and these few helpful tips, moving your family–whether clear across the country, out of military housing, or even both–an absolute breeze. Read on to learn more helpful hints for moving your military family!
1. Plan, plan, plan, and then plan again
A good plan is a great thing to have–but a good contingency plan is invaluable. The simple fact of the matter is that moving can be unpredictable, particularly when you have a family, and it’s really easy for a wrench to fall in the cogs and jam everything up. Planning for your plan to go somewhat awry will help you non let little roadblocks bring you and your move to a grinding halt. Avoid the frustration and make a Plan B.
2. Purge your things
We wrote recently about simple, minimalist living, and at no time does that come more in handy than during a move–and even before and after. The reason is of course simple, the less stuff you have, the less stuff you have to deal with. Take the items you need and bid adieu to the items that you do not–they’re only weighing you down. I mean, do you really need to bring a box of drugstore holiday lights? You’ll probably never get them untangled anyway!
3. Use your resources
The military offers resources for families who are moving because of military service, but the real resources are your friends and family. Not only can they help you pack and take a few of the items you don’t want anymore off your hands–they will also help you stay sane! As someone in the military, you probably know a lot of people who have done the military move ten times and this comes particularly in handy when you are on your first move.
Sure, moving is stressful, but there are some up sides to it as well. From setting up your new house just the way you like it to enjoying the fantastic amenities of your new luxury Aberdeen apartment, it more than makes up for the hassle!
